Bell County's Bad Check Program:
How does the program work?
-
The merchant makes an appointment with the bad check unit.
-
The merchant brings a County Attorney Office employee all bad checks to the appointment. The bad check unit will make copies of the checks, return originals to the merchant and make an appointment for the merchant to return.
-
From these copies, the clerk will send out notices to all the check writers informing them to return to the merchant within ten days of the notice, pay the face value of the check, any fees the merchant attached, and a $25.00 county attorney fee.
-
The merchant will call the County Attorney's Office and report the status of the checks for which notices were sent. The County Attorney's Office will prepare a criminal complaint for those who have not paid
-
The merchant will return to the County Attorney's Office to sign the criminal complaint and give the bad check to the clerk.
-
Once a merchant signs a criminal complaint, the Bell County Attorney's Office will make every effort to collect the monies owed to the merchant.
